A global education trip to Trinidad and Tobago early in her undergraduate career provided Elizabeth Strine with a valuable learning opportunity. Traveling to the island republic with a group of CFAES students over winter break, Libby had the opportunity to learn from community members and agriculturalists while she toured farmland, planted community gardens, and studied the region’s sustainability efforts and response to climate change at the University of the West Indies. She found value in the opportunity to immerse herself in a culture very different from her own, and the experience excited her to seek out similar opportunities to learn
from the unique perspectives of others throughout her undergraduate career.
With four internships throughout her undergraduate career, Libby developed an excellent set of professional skills that will serve her well in her future career. In communications and marketing related roles for the Ohio Cattleman’s Association, AgCredit, Heritage Cooperative, and Nationwide’s Sponsor Relations Team, Libby produced feature articles, performed rigorous data analysis, and created marketing campaigns for products and services across the agriculture industry. Her internships drove home the importance of advocacy for agriculture, and she relished the opportunity to communicate directly with the public about the hard work, selflessness, and pride of the individuals and communities involved in Ohio agriculture. As Education Chair of Agricultural
Communicators of Tomorrow, Libby engaged club membership, industry partners, and the campus community to coordinate two annual Farmers’ Share events designed to promote agriculture, spark discussions, and educate OSU students on aspects of the
industry. Her membership in Sigma Alpha Professional Agricultural Sorority provided similar opportunities for Libby to organize and engage her fellow Buckeyes. Through the organization, Libby helped coordinate service events to benefit Nationwide Children’s
Hospital, Buckeye Food Alliance, and military service members.
Libby identifies Dr. Mary Rodriguez as her most important mentor. Libby shares, “Dr. Rodriguez has been an instrumental part of my academic and personal experience while at Ohio State. She has encouraged me to challenge myself as a professor of several of my classes, offered support and advice as I’ve overcome personal challenges and considered different internships as a student, and as I consider my possibilities following graduation I have been inspired by her willingness to connect with the classes I have been a part of on a personal level, and I am empowered in my own opinions, beliefs and abilities because of her support.”
Through her undergraduate career, Libby has developed an interest in the partnerships between the for-profit and non-profit sectors in support of social causes and community wellbeing and is excited for the opportunity to serve her community in a professional capacity. After graduation, she plans to take a year to accumulate professional experience before pursuing graduate studies.
