Symposium Purpose

The CFAES Teaching & Learning Symposium offers professional development for all members of the College teaching community. This community includes faculty, staff, and students with interest and/or responsibilities relating to: instruction, teaching, advising, student evaluation, outreach, etc. The primary purpose of this college-hosted professional growth and development experience is to provide an opportunity for CFAES to strengthen the collective teaching community. The symposium presents concepts, ideas, best practices, and examples of teaching excellence and innovation for the advancement of student engagement and learning and the enhancement of effective pedagogy and andragogy. Educators as learners are connected to promote the scholarship of teaching, engage in meaningful and authentic teaching-based discourse, and inspire actions toward student learning.

Through this event, it is our hope that participants will challenge themselves and others to become more engaged and active educators.

2023 CFAES Teaching & Learning Symposium
Re-imagining our Culture of Learning:
Keeping the Best, Leaving the Rest

After the experiences of the last couple of years, it would benefit us as educators to recognize “where we are in history” and use this opportunity to capitalize upon our gained insights to re-imagine our culture of learning by exploring and adapting different approaches for the betterment of learner success. By truly examining what is working well and what should be left behind, this reflective process will allow us to focus on our next steps for success, helping the educators among us envision our desired learning experiences and environments to leverage our recent lessons learned into student success.

Focus Areas for Concurrent Session Offerings

Assessment and Evaluation

Topics and resources associated with measuring learner performance using reliable and relevant approaches (assessment) and making evaluations about their performance relative to predetermined standards (evaluation), course-level assessment strategies, program-level assessment planning, and related approaches and strategies (e.g., successful approaches to Scholarship of Teaching and Learning data collection and results analysis, using rubrics to evaluate student work, tools for providing learners with feedback on their performance, crafting learning goals and outcomes, aligning course-level learning goals and outcomes with programmatic level, crafting program-level learning goals and outcomes, using assessment findings for programmatic continuous quality improvement, etc.)

Creating a Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive Learning Environment

- Diversity: a variety of experiences, identities, and backgrounds

- Equity: when everyone has what they need to thrive

- Inclusion: the state of being included within a group or structure

Topics and resources associated with creating, enhancing, and nurturing learning environments that are diverse, equitable, and inclusive (e.g., partnering with Student Life Disability Services, incorporating the CFEAS Principles of Community, identifying content issues for various populations, making Land Acknowledgments, use of pronouns, identifying elements of a welcoming learning environment, etc.)

Designing Educational Experiences Beyond the Classroom

Topics and resources associated with designing educational experiences using non-traditional teaching/learning strategies (beyond the traditional lecture) that can be implemented in a variety of settings (e.g., experiences planned and executed to be immersive and based in experiential learning, online trainings, skill development teams, field experiences, career exploration, focusing on incorporating sensory experiences, creating opportunities that incorporate interactive elements, sequencing learning experiences that enhance knowledge gains with the human experience, crafting meaningful educational experiences for multiple learning preferences, etc.)

Helping Learners Succeed

Topics and resources associated with supporting learners as individuals through a welcoming community which employs a holistic approach of addressing learners’ needs and desires (e.g., advising, connecting learners with campus- and/or community-based resources and support, mentoring, helping learners to recognize individual strengths, proactive academic intervention strategies, establishing and capitalizing on virtual office hours, physical and mental health sensitivity and awareness, developing strategies to support the learning experience of the differently abled, etc.)

Strategies for Instructional Delivery

Topics and resources associated with delivering in-person, online, and/or hybrid style instruction while utilizing effective pedagogy and/or andragogy with the intent of preserving the rigor of teaching and learning exchange (e.g., the flipped classroom, creating community among remote and in-person learners, establishing reliable two-way communication between educators and learners, navigating technical challenges associated learning technologies, planning for learner access to instructional materials, strategies to encourage independent learning, etc.)

Student Engagement within the Teaching and Learning Exchange

Topics and resources associated with having learners be active participants in their educational process for gaining and applying new knowledge and skills - working to have learners establish their role in successful exchanges and cultivating their investment in an immersive, personal, and transformative educational discourse shared by educators and their fellow learners (e.g., how do we as educators provide for active involvement of the learners, tools for building collaboration in our learning experiences, incentivizing interaction with other learners, incorporation of peer feedback, improving multi-directional communication, etc.)
