OSU Students in Borlaug Summer Institute

Godwill Chewachong, Matthew Kost and Brian Pace were among 35 graduate students selected from across the U.S. to participate in the Borlaug Summer Institute on Global Food Security at Purdue University, May 28-June 8, 2013.

Chewachong is a Plant Pathology doctoral student with Feng Qu, and Pace and Kost are doctoral students in Horticulture and Crop Science, studying with Kristin Mercer. “It was an experience of a lifetime meeting specialists who work on different aspects of global food security,” said Chewachong. “It provided an opportunity for me to understand how vital an interdisciplinary approach is needed to solve global hunger.”

Pace said that it was “a great experience,” adding that they focused both on immediate challenges in global food security as well as more abstract questions, such as “what kind of world we want to live in, and how we can build it.” Kost added, “Ensuring sustainable global food security for a growing human population in a changing climate will require an interdisciplinary approach encompassing diverse perspectives."
