Dan Herms, professor and chair in CFAES's Department of Entomology, is this year's recipient of the International Society of Arboriculture’s (ISA) R.W. Harris Author's Citation.
The R.W. Harris Author's Citation is given to authors for sustained excellence in the publication of timely information in the field of arboriculture. ISA President Terrence Flanagan recognized Herms at a ceremony on Aug. 4 in Toronto as part of the ISA Annual Conference and Trade Show Aug. 3-7.
"Dr. Herms' passion for the study and care of plants and trees has led to a career of research and writing numerous publications to guide arborists, fellow scientists, and students in arboriculture and urban forestry," said Flanagan. "He's uncovered significant findings including the development of ash trees resistant to emerald ash borer in today's urban forest."
Herms has written more than 200 publications, including more than 70 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on such topics as emerald ash borer (EAB). His current work on EAB and the development of EAB-resistant trees is believed to have great promise for the future of the urban forest. Based at OARDC's Wooster campus, his lab conducts research dedicated to understanding the interactions between insects and woody plants and their implications for pest management.
"We've learned a lot about how trees work and interact with their environment in the past 30 years. It's enhanced the way our arborists practice their work, so taking the time to search for information with a solid foundation in science is important."—Dan Herms
"ISA has been a driving force behind increasing the scientific base in arboriculture and the profession," Herms said. "We've learned a lot about how trees work and interact with their environment in the past 30 years. It's enhanced the way our arborists practice their work, so taking the time to search for information with a solid foundation in science is important. I am proud to be recognized as someone who has made a contribution to that."

'Champions of tree care'
Herms is one of 11 distinguished professionals who make up the circle of winners for ISA's Awards of Distinction, sponsored by Bartlett Tree Experts. Robert Bartlett Jr., chairman and CEO of Bartlett Tree Experts, said, "Bartlett is proud to partner with ISA in support of the 2013 Awards of Distinction. These individuals are truly 'champions of tree care.' We applaud all of the honorees for their tireless effort in research, teaching, mentoring their peers, and dedication to the best daily practices of arboriculture."
ISA has been honoring members and industry professionals with the Awards of Distinction since 1963. Nine categories recognize candidates in such areas as research, publishing, education, and advancing the cause of the organization. The winners are selected by a diverse group of experts in arboriculture. More than 20,000 members make up ISA's organization worldwide.
