    LONDON, Ohio – The Farm Science Review Hall of Fame will welcome its 23rd class of inductees at the Vice President’s Luncheon on Sept. 18. Jim Beuerlein, Michael Gahn and Bobby Moser have been selected for induction because of their contributions to the success of the Farm Science Review. The 50th Farm Science Review is September 18-20 at the Molly Caren Agricultural Center in London, Ohio.

    COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State University today named alumnus Bruce McPheron vice president for agricultural administration and dean of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

    McPheron is currently dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University and will start his new appointment on Nov. 1, 2012, subject to approval by the Board of Trustees. 

    He will succeed Bobby Moser, who has served as dean and vice president since 1991. Moser announced his retirement in September 2011.

    Jack pines, which are common in parts of the northern Great Lakes, need fire to thrive.

    So does the rare and endangered Kirtland’s warbler, which nests only in burned or otherwise disturbed young jack pine stands in a handful of locations in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ontario -- and nowhere else on Earth.

    Both are part of the same "fire-dependent ecosystem," a type of biological community that needs occasional fires in order to persist.

    Crowds swell in the summer months at Put-in-Bay as vacationers visit Lake Erie to fish, boat, and relax, and as young scientists study at Stone Lab. But students don't need to be the only ones having fun learning about Lake Erie. Visitors can take advantage of Ohio Sea Grant's science and history tours at landmarks all around the bay, from the South Bass Island Lighthouse to Gibraltar Island. The tours are a fun way to learn about Lake Erie without sitting through a traditional lecture.

    The CFAES Library is being revitalized. Located in the south wing of the Agricultural Administration Building in Columbus and first opened back in 1956, the new facility -- to be renamed the CFAES Library and Student Success Center -- will be renovated "to meet important goals to transform it into a multi-functional, competitive, 21st-century" facility, planners say.

    OSU Extension now has 12 field specialists located around the state, each working on a specific focus area and able to respond quickly to current topics and pressing issues. A field specialist in taxation will begin in September, and a search is in process for a field specialist in family wellness.
