Learning Communities FAQ

What is a Learning Community? Why should I join one?

Learning Communities provide direct connections to faculty and staff, allow you to live with other students who share your major and/or interests, and provide you exclusive access to activities and events specifically designed with your personal and academic success in mind. Research indicates that students who are a part of a Learning Community at Ohio State find it easier to create study groups in their halls, are more than likely to believe that their hall environment supports their academic success, and have significantly higher GPAs than their peers who are not involved.
More specific information can be found at: https://housing.osu.edu/learning-communities/

How do I apply to join a Learning Community? (New First-Year Students and Transfer)

1.) Complete the Application and find the application deadlines at: https://www.housing.osu.edu/lcms
2.) Ensure your completed housing contract and space reservation fee are RECEIVED no later than May 29th (if you are under 18, your signed contract must be mailed and received by May 31st to be assigned). Note that housing contracts are sent on a rolling basis based upon the date you paid your acceptance fee to Ohio State and will come to your OSU e-mail account. (The first round will begin in late March). Please be sure that this account is set up. Questions about contracts can be directed to 614-292-8266 or housing@osu.edu.

How do I apply for a Learning Community? (Returning Students & Campus Change)

1.) Complete the Learning Community Application and find the application deadline at: http://go.osu.edu/LCs
2.) Ensure your completed housing reselection according to the timeline provided by Housing Administration. Students changing to Columbus from another OSU campus must contact Housing to request a contract be issued and should do so by January 29th.
Questions about contracts, room selection, etc. can be directed to 614-292-8299 or housing@osu.edu.

When will I find out if I am accepted into a Learning Community?

New students (inclucing transfer students) will be notified by the end of April (via e-mail) in order to help make admissions decisions. Please note that acceptance into a Learning Community does not guarantee housing- you must also complete your housing contract and submit your space reservation fee by May 29th to secure your space. Returning students (including campus change) will be notified by mid-February (via e-mail) so they know their status in time for the housing reselection process.

Can I choose a roommate who is not in the Learning Community?

No, students are required to live with other students participating in the Learning Community.

Do I have to be a specific major to be in a Learning Community?

A select number of Learning Communities do have major requirements. Please visit individual Learning Community pages for more details.

What about the Honors and Scholars Programs?

Please note that the Honors Program and all Scholars Programs have a separate application process. If admitted to Honors, students want to live in an Honors Hall, they indicate this on their housing contract- no additional application needed. First-year Honors students can apply for an LC, and are required to either live in an Honors Hall or an LC. Residence Life does not have a role in selecting Honors or Scholars students. For further questions, please contact Honor and Scholar Programs at honors-scholars@osu.edu or 614-292-3135.

Can I be in the Scholars Program and a Learning Community?

Both require students to live with other members in your cohort. Students are not eligible to be in both during their first year. Students may apply to both, but if accepted, must choose one or the other.
