Information Session for May 2019 Program - Panama: Through the Lens of AgriCulture, Sustainability and Diversity
This program is designed to give students a different perspective of agriculture and other economic sectors that influence food, fiber, and fuel. Additionally, this program will serve to educate and allow students to experience the various applications of agriculture and construction on varying scenarios, especially within a socioeconomic and ethnically diverse context. Through participating in this program students will explore culture outside of the classroom and view, first-hand, applications of agriculture based on varying available resources and needs of the population and/or country. Prior to travelling, students will spend time investigating background information on the country, as well as the country’s agricultural, construction, and industrial sectors.
By the end of the program, students are expected to exhibit an understanding of various practices of agriculture, construction and industrial sectors in a developing country and the country’s impact on the world. Specifically, students will:
- Gain awareness of the traditional role of agricultural sustainability;
- Expand their knowledge of (and gain an appreciation for) of agriculture in a developing culture;
- Engage in a learning experience that incorporates interaction with a different culture of socioeconomic status;
- Explore the use and impacts of multiple agricultural practices (i.e. animals, traditional agriculture, environment, culture and community) in a non-U.S. setting;
- Examine the economic impact of sustainability to compare life outcomes of residents (prices and values of materials, food, housing, resources, utilities on lifestyle and tradition through visits to home improvement stores, animal auctions, food costs, coffee facilities, etc.;
- Experience a setting where an intermix of racial population engages in community;
- Analyze fundamental background information and compare applications from Ohio to Panama, a developing country that varies within itself.
