Overview of CFAES Learning Community:

The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences Learning Community focuses on helping participants become successful CFAES students and future professionals through an approach which emphasizes: practical experiences, mentorship, academic achievement, and leadership development.

Who is eligible:

Freshmen and sophomores whose majors are in food, agricultural, and/or environmental sciences (CFAES) and who seek to enhance their leadership, communication, and teamwork skills.

Highlights: 

  • Interact with world-renowned faculty and alumni on research and outreach opportunities.
  • Be involved in impactful projects focused on improving the agricultural student community.
  • Attend workshops focused on leadership development. 
  • There are approximately 80 students in this learning community, which is typically 40 freshan and 40 sophomores. Students are housed in Nosker House. More information on Nosker house is available here
  • Expand professional networks by interacting with industry representatives. 
  • Attend industry field trips arranged for first and second year students. 
  • Ability to interact with ATI students through collaborative activities and projects.

How to Apply:

New Students:

  • Students interested in being a member of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences Learning Community should complete the Learning Community Application by April 16, 2018. No late applications will be accepted. You do not have to wait until you are accepted to Ohio State and/or receive your housing contract to apply.
  • Housing Contracts are sent to your OSU email account based upon your paid acceptance to the University beginning in March.
  • Please make sure your contract and space reservation fee are received no later than May 31, 2018 in order to ensure your eligibility to participate in a Learning Community.  
  • On your contract, please make sure you select North Campus as your requested area of residence. 
  • Please note that all students in Learning Communities are required to reside in a space within the Learning Community and live with other Learning Community participants. Learning Community students may only request roommates accepted into the same LC. 

Current Students:

  • Current OSU students who will be in their second year during the 2018-2019 school year and are interested in joining or returning to the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences Learning Community should complete the Learning Community Application no later than January 26, 2018. Completing this application does not guarantee housing in an Ohio State Residence Hall or a specific room type. You must submit your reselection form by the University Housing deadline in order to participate. Your housing reselection information will arrive at your OSU e-mail account at a later date.
  • Please note that all students in Learning Communities are required to reside in a space within the Learning Community and live with other Learning Community participants. Learning Community students may only request roommates accepted into the same LC. 
  • Change of campus students should apply through this (the current student) application and must also contact Housing Assignments no later than January 26, 2018 at 614-292-8266 or housing@osu.edu to ensure they are included in the reselection process and eligible for Learning Community participation.

Interesting Facts:

  • The FAES Learning Community brings in faculty to have informal conversations with students, social events, trips around and outside of campus, family dinner nights, and more.
  • The FAES Learning Community has an annual hog roast and the program coordinators are looking into creating an annual tailgate with alumni and a corn-hole tournament. 
  • Students have the ability to receive scholarships to attend the Agriculture Future of America Leaders Conference.
  • Students have access to weekly advising hours in their Residence Hall.
  • Students attend industry field trips arranged specifically for first and second year students.
  • Students develop leadership skills through programming activities such as “Strengths Quest".
